Graey x Fashion's Night Out - dress photos!

Last month, when George shot Rachel at the rock climbing gym, I took advantage of the opportunity of having them together to have him photograph her in two of the dresses I made for the Lomography FNO event I did last September.  It was strangely warm considering it was January, so we were able to get a few shots outdoors, right on the terrace area outside of the gym.

This is the dress I spent the most time on.  I hand dyed the silk noil that makes up the body of the dress, which is why it looks like a mottled violet blue.  I also bleached the periwinkle colored lace that makes up the cap sleeves.  You can see that on the edges of the flowers on the lace the original color is still there.  The bleached parts range from a pale blue to a yellow.  I want to play around with bleaching other fabric remnants that I have, and maybe make more one-of-a-kind pieces like this.  The final touch on this dress are the handmade rosettes.  I found different colors and types of silks (chiffon, habotai, organza, charmeuse) that I felt matched the dress and made the rosettes and sewed them on one by one.  (That is how I whiled away my time during the hurricane last August.)  George did a great job of capturing the colors and the delicate nature of the dress, and of course, Rachel looks lovely as always.

I also did another simpler dress, made out of some sort of cotton/poly jersey blend.  I bleached both the fabric and lace so it has that tie dyed effect, and cut the lace in an irregular pattern, following the floral lace shapes as opposed to cutting the lace in a straight line.

Graey x Lomography - Fashion's Night Out event

A lot of things have happened in the past several days, including Hurricane Irene, but I will get to that in another post.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm doing an event with Lomography for Fashion's Night Out, which is very soon -- next Thursday, less than a week from today!  Along with indie designers Rebecca Turbow, Samantha Pleet, and Hayden-Harnett, I will be showing photos documenting my creative process, as well as a few completed garments.

Here are the event details, as per the Lomography website:

New York City designers Rebecca Turbow, Samantha Pleet, Hayden-Harnett and Janet Kim of Graey were provided with Lomography cameras and film to highlight their upcoming collection through photographic storyboards. These images document their inspiration, perspective, strategy and production leading up to final product, their original pieces, which will be showcased live at the event.

The fabulous nightlife mover and shaker DJ Jess will be mixing all night long, and the food and Pabst Blue Ribbon will be abundant.

So whip out your most stylish threads and enter a collaborative universe of art, design, photography and fashion that deems outstanding during New York’s iconic evening of glitz and glamour!
