One blog I follow is Fashion Incubator, which is a great resource for people who want to start and develop their own fashion businesses. Recently, Ms. Fasanella (the blogger) posted a response to the question, "How much cash do you need to start a small clothing line?" She answers the question literally, acknowledging that the cost for her to start a small clothing line is different from what someone else would. The post is worth reading because she not only explains costs involved, but where people end up wasting money when starting their own line.
Her post is very specific, dealing with costs to develop a menswear label of "casual western styled sportcoats at a mid range price point for men aged 35+."
However, most of the points she discusses are broad in relevance, and it's important to be specific when defining your target customer. You can read the post here.
Also, if you're an independent designer, it can be difficult to find fabric and trims dealers who will sell to you in small quantities. Through F-I, I found out about DG Expo, which was a small tradeshow of dealers who sell low minimums. You can find more info here.
